So what exactly is our team building out there?
Fiber internet transmits your data as pulses of light through thin strands of glass rather than electrical signals over copper wire. Light does not weaken over distance the way an electrical signal does, so the connection at the end of your street performs the same as the one at the beginning. That is what the crews on the poles are building: a 100% fiber path that runs from the street directly into your home, with no copper anywhere in the connection.

Greenlight has been building and owning its own network since 2011, and has connected over 100,000 homes and businesses across 8 markets in New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Plans run from 500 Mb up to 8 Gig, and every one of them is symmetrical, meaning your upload speed matches your download speed.

That symmetry is the part most people notice first. Many cable plans cap upload speeds at around 20 Mbps no matter how fast the download is, which is why a video call freezes on your end while a show streams perfectly in the next room. Greenlight upload speeds run up to 40 times faster than cable. How does fiber change your Wi-Fi at home?
Fiber determines how much speed reaches your house. Your Wi-Fi setup determines how much of it reaches the back bedroom. Both matter, and a fast connection running through an aging router will still feel slow.

Three things make the biggest difference:

Router placement. Put it in the center of the house, on the main floor, at least three feet off the ground, and out in the open. Routers in basement corners send most of their signal into the ground. Plaster, brick, stone, and metal ductwork all block Wi-Fi far more than modern drywall.

Mesh coverage. Most homes over 2,000 square feet and most multi-story homes need two or three mesh units so devices hand off cleanly as people move around.

Wired connections. Anything that stays in one place, like a desktop, a game console, or the main TV’s streaming device, should be connected via an Ethernet cable. That also frees up wireless capacity for phones and tablets.

Router age matters too. A router more than five years old often cannot handle 20 or more connected devices, which is roughly what a 1 Gig plan is built to support. Crews working on poles and lines are laying the fiber path for everyone on the block. Once construction reaches your street, service becomes available at your address.
What is fiber internet, and how is it different from cable?

Does Greenlight provide a Wi-Fi router?
Yes. Total Managed Wi-Fi includes a Wi-Fi router and can be added to any internet plan starting at $5 per month. You are also welcome to use your own router, though models more than five years old often struggle to keep up with 20 or more connected devices.
How do I find out if Greenlight is available on my street?
